billy nye of nye automotive group, syracuse,ny and friends joined capt's kevin gerrity and dave bender for their annual overnighter. inspite of pleas from us to reschedule due to the lack of tuna around billy insisited we go and ,make the best of it. we stopped on the bluefin grounds at the tail end of a good jigging bite and we had a 35 pounder hit the deck almost immediatley on a butterfly jig, but that was it, so we steamed off to the hudson canyon. the afternoon troll was uneventful, although we marked a ton of bait. we also saw at least 50 rays airing out during the day, and several finback whales. the chunk was equally dissapointing, we lost a nice swordfish on the shark rig? and had 6 bites from the rays, including several being jigged on the butterflies. back on the troll in the morning we had a double header of white marlin and boated one. we enjoy these guys company and they certainly did make the most of their trip, we'll see them again next year for another adventure.

capt's jimmy gahm, sean carton and dave bender took tom and tim cunningham of colts neck out to the blue fin grounds to jig some fish. upon arrival at the 40 mile spot we had a nice fish in the boat within a half hour. after many hours of jigging and moving around we got a call from a friend another 18 miles to the east, so off we went. we saw and read the fish but could not get a bite. our friend and another boat were catching quite well and it was very humbling to say the least. late in the day tim connected with a 40 pounder on our stella spinning outfit and we called it a day. we had a great ride home and as usual the cunningham's we very appreciative of the effort, although we only had 2 fish. see video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMIkWNfh2hg
doug and dustin whitham, nyc, joined capt's kevin gerrity and sean carton for their annual canyon trip. we didn't know what to expect since we had not been out since the big blow, but we knew the night bite was not spectacular to say the least. the boys managed a longfin before dark and did not have a touch all night long on the chunk. up on the troll in the morning produced two more longfins and some mahi. as always the guys had a great time offshore with their pals and we look forward to fishing with them again next summer.

capt's kevin gerrity and dave bender took dave farris of bucks county, pa and friends out to the hudson canyon for an overnighter. with first hand knowledge of the slow trolling i was skeptical to say the least about catching on the troll. upon putting lines in at 1:30 pm we were called on the radio by a good friend who of all things was chunking midafternoon, and catching 50-60 pound yellowfins. he was running out of bait and asked if we'd like to take over their slick, we were more than happy to. after a short time we had a bite and a 50 pound yellowfin was in the boat. from about 3pm till dark we had yellowfins on the surface eating our chunks, but not our hook baits, it was torture. we tried every trick in the book and finally managed 2 more fish. we stayed with it until 7am hoping for the day bite but it never happened. several friends did very well on the warm side of the eddy, i take full responsibilty for the slow trip. the farris boys could not have b een more helpful and supportive, they cut the bait, worked the lines and were fantastic company. to top it off my sat tv went out and they missed the eagles game. we will invite these guys back in 2011 for a cost only trip, they were the salt of the earth.
capt's sean carton and paul skuby took bigeye slayers billy nighland and john leahman of cedar grove along with some friends out for their annual canyon troll. i warned billy in advance that the trolling was very slow. the last two previou s years we got covered up with bigeyes, so i was very apprehensive on taking them in such slow conditions. the day was as advertised as after 10 hours of trolling we were 1 for 3 on 50 pound yellowfins. the guys had the right attitude and enjoyed each others company on a beautiful august day in the hudson canyon.

capt's jimmy gahm and sean carton took the dave, greg, erik, and lindsay dial out for their annual canyon trip. the trolling remained a bust as we did not troll a thing. setting up for the night we had the fish under the boat several times, but the would not eat. at false light we caught and boated a 50lb yellowfin on a shimano butterfly jig. the guys worked thier tails off, with not much to show for their efforts. the dial family is a pleasure to be with, dave and his wife have certainly done a fantastic job raising these young adults. a family picture including a tuna will soon follow.
capt's kevin gerrity and dave bender took chris glassford of liverpool,ny and friends on an overnighter to the hudson canyon. after some very dismal reports and fishing. we had hoped to turn things around. we trolled all day tuesday and only managed some mahi for our efforts, although the water was deep blue and 79 degrees we could not manage anything else. we set up for the night and at 12:30 am we had our first tuna bite as a 60 pounder hit the deck. we worked all night long and at about 4am we were able to jig a few small yellowfins, but not the ones we wanted. back up on the troll on wednesday we once again, we "took the collar" and didn't have a touch. hopefully things turn around shortly as chris and the boys certainly deserve much better. chris is already talking about next year, he is a class act, as always, and understands " it's fishing"

capt's matt muzlay and sean carton took bob eagle of long island and friends back to the toms canyon on wednesday august 11th for a day troll. fishing remained slow as we didn't get our first bite until about 930am, we had two yellowfins come up but only came tight on one 5o pound fish. the rest of the day saw only one more tuna bite resulting in an undersize fish. the rest of the fleet was also very quiet, we were starting to pull the rods when all of a sudden the man in the blue suit came knocking. the blue marlin hit a flat line and proceeded to put on a nice arial display. after backing down and getting him to within 50' of the boat he shook off, but not before giving the guys a huge thrill and some nice pictures( to follow).

capt's kevin gerrity and dave bender took steve, dave and kenny raines of chester,ny, ken petro of east hanover,nj mike bott of lagrange,ny, and mike moeller of middlebrook,ny out for an overnighter to the toms canyon on monday august 9th. we trolled 2 beautiful white marlin and kenny and mike both scored their first ever. we trolled 2 small yellowfins by dark and set up for the night. i made the unfortunate mistake of running from the toms to the hudson canyon looking for bigger fish, well as luck would have it it was the wrong move. we did not have a bite at night and all we had for our efforts was another small yellowfin in the morning. i know the guys were very excited to see the whites as were kevin and i, i'm truly sorry the move did'nt pan out, but it was with good intention. see video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iw-YG5Vu4bM
capt's jimmy gahm and dave bender took keith and ken vannozzi of titusville,nj along with zz topp, jim, jeff, john, and dan out for a day trip to the toms canyon saturday august 7th. we had a very rough ride out and the early morning hours were no bargain either, but we were there and made the best of it. we came tight on a 5 banger of yellowfins right away but we released these small fish to hit puberty. after a few hours we put a couple nice 40-50 lb yellows in the boat and the seas calmed down and the fishing picked up. we boated 9 very nice yellowfins and our last bite resulted in a 60lb yellowfin and a beautiful white marlin release for dan. we had a great time as always with these guys and the banter never stops. we'll see these guys back in the fall for an overnighter. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kA920eIrWsI

capt's jimmy gahm, nick mills, and dave bender took jaimie and john borenios of emerson, new jersey out for a day of bluefin fishing. we started the day trolling to try and locate the fish and after about an hour we had a screamer on. after a tough battle nick landed a beautiful 80 pound bluefin for our "over" fish. a few hours later we came tight on another big fish and this time quinny battled a bruiser and after a long battle quinny boated, and released a 80-90 pound class bluefin. we then trolled our under fish but it was tiny so we kept at it, about 1130am we saw the fish on top and the guys broke out the butterfly jigs. manasquan mike came tight first, but the fish came unglued shortly thereafter, jaimie came tight next and we had a really nice under fish. we spent the remainder of the afternoon jigging and releasing a few more fish including a cow nosed ray on a jig. only joey " bannanas" didn't have a bite. I WONDER WHY? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_Wwo4uzm-w

capt's kevin gerrity and dave bender took brian klingerman of richboro, pa and friends to the hudson canyon on an overnighter thursday july 22, 2010. the ride out and the thursday troll were sporty to say the least but the forecast was a diminishing one so we set out east. we went 2 for 4 on 50 pound yellowfins on the troll thursday before setting up for the night. after only about an hour on the chunk we heard that awesome noise that was void the past two years, zing! a fifty pound yellowfin in the box. the rest of the night we went 3 for 4 on the same size fish, until 4am we had them in the slick. the guys who were new to canyon fishing got a quick education and when the smoke cleared we had 11 yellowfins on ice. we jigged several of the fish on butterfly jigs. back on the troll friday morning we had a screamer within 100 yards of our slick, we thought we had the right one until the jump, big blue marlin aprox 450-500lbs. with less than 10 wraps on the reel we backed down for about an hour, we were now in control, it appeared that we may get a clean release on this beauty, but as luck would have it 20' from the leader she shook loose, ahhhh! that was our only bite of the day, with the exception of another blue marlin who hit two lures but never came tight, all in all the klingerman's are " hooked" to say the least.

capt's jimmy gaham, sean carton and dave bender took gerry and joe zagorski to the hudson canyon for a day troll. after a sloppy ride out in a very dark night we started trolling at 430 am, we had our first longfin of the season on ice shortly thereafter. i guess it could go either way, cath one right away is usually bad luck, well, we managed to claw out 2 more 50 pound yellowfins. for the day we had 3 nice tuna, jumped off a white marlin and two mahi, and a lotta laughs. the ride home was beautiful, we'll see these guys for an overnighter this fall. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYqgM6feHuo see video
capt's kevin gerrity and sean carton too bob scott of millington,nj and friends for a day trip to the hudson canyon fri day july 9th,2010. the fishing in the morning was excellant for these first time canyon fisherman as they put 9 40-50 pound yellowfins in the boat by 7am. the rest of the day was slow adding 4 gaffer mahi and another nice yellowfin. the guys did a great job in the "fire drill" , hopefully these guys are now "hooked" on the canyon fishing and perhaps we'll get them out overnight.
